External & Corporate Courses

At Hand & Lock, we pride ourselves on offering a diverse range of courses in collaboration with private institutions, resulting in highly beneficial and exciting partnerships. We have had the privilege of planning & running workshops with esteemed museums such as the Natural History Museum, the Household Cavalry Museum, the National Army Museum, Sunbury Gallery, and many more. Each of these courses is uniquely designed to reflect and complement the venue's distinctive character and heritage.

For instance, at the Natural History Museum, our course participants will have the opportunity to stitch an embroidered fossil within the fossil gallery, immersing themselves in the natural world through needle and thread. At the Household Cavalry Museum, attendees create intricate British military goldwork designs, celebrating the rich history and traditions of the British Cavalry.

How does this work?

Our approach is highly collaborative and tailored to each venue. We begin with a site visit to explore the possibilities and understand the specific context and space available. If there are particular pieces or themes you would like us to incorporate into the course design, we are more than happy to discuss and integrate them into our curriculum.

Based on factors such as the size of the space, the techniques being taught, the venue's distance from Hand & Lock, and the length of the course, we will develop a detailed proposal and quote. This ensures that each course is meticulously planned and executed to the highest standards. The hosting venue then has the opportunity to sell tickets at a mark up, providing a valuable and enriching experience to their visitors.

By collaborating with Hand & Lock, museums can enhance their educational offerings, engage their audience in new and creative ways, and celebrate their unique collections through the timeless art of embroidery.

Testimonials

‘Lucy has coordinated two fantastic goldwork workshops for us so far and the feedback we have received from our attendees has been exemplary. She has ably managed to teach classes containing a mix of beginners and long-time sewers without leaving anyone behind. The students have all thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we have been greatly impressed by the varied designs that Lucy has developed for each class. We are already looking forward to running our next session with Lucy’

Programmes Team, National Army Museum

’Thank you for teaching me a wonderful new skill: goldwork! It's been such a pleasure, time flew and even though it's humble beginnings for me I feel like I've come out of there with a lot of knowledge. You girls rock!’

Workshop at the Household Cavalry Museum

’The workshop was brilliant! It was so lovely to meet Lucy and Freya in person. The instructions were clear and very well presented. The atmosphere was relaxed and happy. The museum director was also really lovely and very interested in what we were doing. Overall a fabulous experience.’
