Pictured here is: The Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum, John Martin, 1822, restored 2011, © Tate, London 2014
On this pocket square we’ve used John Martin’s oil painting of the destruction of the great cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD. It is imagined from the opposite side of the Bay of Naples and shows survivors struggling to get onto to dry land. Pompeii is painted in such detail that specific buildings can be identified including the Basilica and the circular ‘great Theatre’ and in the distance to the left you see Herculaneum covered in lava. Mount Vesuvius is in the early stages of eruption, with the lava enveloping the landscape in a vivid red, while the sky is consumed with ash clouds and lightning strikes.
