Introduction to Millinery: Master the Basics

Duration: Weekly 3 hour sessions

The craft of hat making has a rich history dating back centuries. From extravagant headpieces worn by royalty to elegant hats adoring the heads of stylish individuals; millinery has always been a fascinating art form. In this course we will explore the world of millinery, its history, techniques and why mastering the basics is essential for anyone interested in this creative craft.

Students will end the course having completed 4 separate headpieces. You will learn how to:
- Make and work with sinamay bias ribbon
- Create feather pads and correctly attach them
- Block, wire and trim a sinamay fascinator base
- Make a feather flower
- Make an unwired, large sinamay fascinator
- Attach headpieces correctly
- As well as looking at balance, wearability and current trends

All of the materials you need for this class will be provided for you as part of your course experience. You are more than welcome to bring your own equipment if you would rather use your own materials but everything will be provided for you.

Tutor Profile

Katie Vale is a millinery maven with almost two decades of expertise in crafting unique and awe-inspiring hats. Katie began her millinery journey in 2004 and has gone on to create hats for clients all over the world. In 2020 she set up The Millinery School and is also the co-founder and director of the British Millinery Association CIC. Passionate about millinery and ensuring its place within our future, Katie is exciting to be teaching this course. This course is being provided in conjuction with the British Milinery Association (BMA CIC). The BMA CIC is a group of professional milliners and makers, passionate about what we do. We aim to create an inclusive, vibrant place of sharing and learning within our dedicated millinery community.

Accessibility

Our in person classes are taught in our school which is located upstairs in our studio. Unfortunately the building does not have lift access, so use of the stairs would be necessary.
